I grew up in a small English town where the kitchen felt like home. These classic chocolate chip cookie bars capture that comfort—chewy middles, golden edges, and melty chocolate in every bite. Baked in a 9×13 pan, they come together fast with pantry staples, making them perfect for weeknights, potlucks, or holidays. One pan, easy prep, big smiles.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 16 bars 1x

Ingredients

Scale

2 and 1/4 cups (281g) all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 and 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup (12 Tbsp; 170g) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
1 cup (200g) packed light brown sugar
1/3 cup (67g) granulated sugar
1 large egg plus 1 large egg yolk, at room temperature
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 cup (180g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
Optional: sprinkle of flaky sea salt

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a 9×13 pan with parchment, leaving overhang.

  • Whisk flour, baking soda, cornstarch, and salt in a large bowl.

  • In another bowl, whisk melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth.

  • Whisk in the egg, extra yolk, and vanilla.

  • Pour wet into dry; mix until combined. Fold in chocolate chips.

  • Press dough evenly into the pan; add extra chips and a pinch of flaky salt.

  • Bake 30–34 minutes until edges are lightly browned; center should look just set.

  • Cool in pan on a rack for at least 1 hour. Lift out and slice into squares.

Notes

Underbake slightly for extra chew.
Store covered at room temperature up to 1 week.
Great with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of melted chocolate.
Measure flour by spoon-and-level to avoid dry, cakey bars.
