For the frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)

  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder

  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 tbsp milk

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8×8 inch square pan with parchment paper.

  • Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  • Add eggs and vanilla; mix until incorporated.

  • Fold in flour, salt, and baking soda until just combined.

  • Stir in chocolate chips.

  • Spread dough evenly into the prepared pan.

  • Bake for about 30 minutes, until the edges are golden.

  • Cool completely before frosting.

  • For frosting: cream together cream cheese and butter.

  • Add cocoa powder and half the powdered sugar; mix well.

  • Add remaining sugar, vanilla, and milk. Beat until fluffy, about 4 minutes.

  • Spread frosting evenly over cooled bars.

  • Slice into squares and serve.
